Spring 2012: Our Youth Sketchers program is the place to be for young artists who want to have fun learning new skills. We offer beginning, intermediate, and advanced classes (Levels 1, 2, and 3) at our SI studio as well as our on-site Draw to Learn program at Santa Cruz and Monterey schools. Ages range from middle to high school.

How our innovative youth drawing program works:

SI Youth Sketchers is for young artists (13-17-years) who want to learn new drawing skills. Small class size ensures that each sketcher gets personal attention with their particular lesson. If you have a group of 4-6 young artists we can organize a class for them.

Saturdays: 1:00-3:00pm, starting January 28 Levels 1 (beginners), 2, and 3 (We can schedule other times if enough students are interested in forming more youth groups.)

Cost: $150 gets you 4, 2-hour sessions. All materials are included.

Register by calling Rob at 831.421.0774. He’ll talk with you about the program, how it works, and when to get started. Parents of continuing students can contact Rob by email to let him know you’d like to participate in classes again.

Level 1: (4 weeks)
Explore! Drawing coach, Rob Court, introduces students to basic skills such as gripping the pencil, blocking in shapes, measuring proportions, and perception of space. Students quickly gain confidence as sketchers in these fun, informative classes for beginners–especially for those who think they can’t draw. (Read reviews about Rob’s teaching method.)

Level 2:  (4 weeks)
Experiment! Our Level 2 lessons get students into experimenting with different media (graphite, charcoal, pastels, ink), drawing papers, and techniques. Students are introduced to basic principles in composition with an emphasis on drawing from observation and from the imagination. Students are also encouraged to explore specific areas of interest in drawing such as sketchbooking, illustration, design, and animation.

Level 3: (4 weeks)
Express! After honing their skills and experimenting with materials, our Level 3 lessons help students to find their voice in drawing and learn ways to express it. Whether it’s more intensive studies in realism or surrealism, concept art or fine art, the Scribbles Institute provides guidance and tools for the exciting process of drawing out your inner artist. Advanced students can do projects oriented toward careers based on drawing skills such as animation, comics, movie storyboarding, game design and fashion design. Middle and high school students learn basic concept sketching techniques such as blocking-in and shading. In learning the basic proportions of human figures and animated characters, students create character model sheets. Other aspects of concept sketching covered are layout, perspective, and basic storyboarding.

SI Youth Sketchers is for young artists (13-17-years) who want to learn new drawing skills. Students are encouraged to express their own styles as they build confidence in spontaneous doodling, sketching ideas, and drawing realistically.

My daughter has always been interested in drawing.  However, she was limited to a few self-taught techniques and a #2 pencil.  After having taken several art workshops at the Scribbles Institute, her abilities now include using charcoal pencils, shading, and drawing proportionally from objects at different angles. In addition to learning new avenues to express creativity, the Scribbles Institute has an pleasant atmosphere where my teenage daughter can enjoy the company of other young artists who have similar interests.  Rob Court is a positive and upbeat mentor for inspiring artists.  He has encouraged my daughter to pursue her talents and experiment with new ideas.  Both my daughter and I are delighted with the Scribbles Institute and look forward to more workshops.  –Susan, Watsonville
